FROM THE EDITOR:

HAPPY NEW YEAR! It only took me a whole year, but I'm finally sending out the first issue of the new family newsletter -- to be published every other month. This past year has seen a lot of changes for me and Dave. Carol and John moved in last January. Dave ran in the Boston Marathon. I gave my first paper at a major national meeting of a science professional association. This past fall I passed the final part of my qualifying exams and am now A.B.D. (All But Dissertation). I plan to graduate in June and am now applying for jobs.

This first issue of the new edition of the family newsletter begins with a chapter of the family history from a paper John and Carol wrote for John's last college class. It reviews the family history as told in the original Livingston Newsletter. I invite all the children of George and Marguerite Overath to write their own family chapters to bring us up to date! I will publish them in the order I receive them.

NAME THE NEWSLETTER CONTEST!

Since your new editor does not live in Livingston, she hesitates to name the new edition of the newsletter the "Livingston Newsletter." She also doesn't want to call it the "Athens Newsletter" since she plans on moving as soon as she finishes her degree and gets a real job! Send your ideas to: Deb Overath, 165 Brentwood Dr., Athens, GA 30605 by February 15th. I'll publish all the alternatives in the March newsletter and put it to a vote. The "author" of the winning name gets a special prize: a year's subscription to the newsletter and (more importantly) I promise NOT to leave that person my VISA card (bill) in my will!
